Trump team considers 'direct talks' with N. Korea's Kim Jong-un

President-elect Donald Trump's team is reportedly considering pursuing direct talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in an effort to reduce the risks of armed conflict.
The move would revive the summit diplomacy that marked Trump's first term, including three high-profile meetings with Kim, though previous talks failed to produce concrete results on denuclearization.
However, some have voiced skepticism about the prospects of a prompt summit under the incoming administration, citing North Korea's significantly advanced nuclear and missile programs, its close alignment with Russia, and more pressing security concerns for the U.S., such as the Russia-Ukraine war.

For a deeper analysis of North Korea, we're joined by Dr. Go Myong-hyun, Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for National Security Strategy. Welcome, Dr. Go.

(GO) 1. Dr. Go, let's go straight into the key question, do you think North Korean leader Kim Jong-un would also be open to talks with Trump, and if so, do you expect it to happen in the near future?

(MYERS) 2. Now to professor Myers, so if the Trump administration moves forward with direct talks, what key policy objectives should the U.S. prioritize in discussions?

(GO) 3. Trump named Alex Wong, who has engaged in working-level nuclear talks with North Korea during his first term, as his principal deputy national security adviser.
What could this signal for Trump's policies on N. Korea?

(GO) 4. Meanwhile, North Korea last week held a weapons exhibition, showcasing its most recent Hwaseong-19 ICBM.
Pundits say that the missile could carry multiple warheads.
How advanced is North Korea's missile technology, and how might this impact security dynamics, particularly in East Asia?
(MYERS) 5. Professor Myers, With the showcase, what message do you think N. Korea is trying to send by showcasing its advanced weapons?

(MYERS) 6. North Korea and Russia have signed a protocol on enhancing sports exchanges for next year, the North's state media said Monday, as the two nations have been bolstering cooperation in various fields. Professor, How do you assess the relationship between the two sides?

(GO) 7. According to BBC, citing the Open Source Centre's satellite imagery, Russia is estimated to have supplied North Korea with more than a million barrels of oil since March this year.
This is seen a form of exchange for North Korea's supply of troops to the war. First, out of all things, why is oil a crucial commodity in this exchange?

(MYERS) 8. This clearly is a violation of UNSC sanctions resolutions against North Korea. Professor, How does this complicate efforts to maintain international sanctions, especially with Russia’s veto power?

(GO) 9. So amid this situation Dr. Go, are there ways for the U.S. and its allies to enforce these sanctions more effectively, or is the current system of enforcement fundamentally flawed?

(MYERS) 10. These autocratic regimes' cooperation to help one another achieve whatever it is they want is very concerning.
Professor Myers, what are the chances that Russia provides technology to North Korea to improve spy satellites and ballistic missiles?

(GO) 11. If so, wouldn't Russia have to worry about counterattacking developments in the future?

(MYERS) 12. Professor Myers, what long-term effects could North Korea’s growing cooperation with Russia and other autocratic regimes have on global non-proliferation efforts? How might this reshape international security dynamics in the coming decades?
