So many students over the years have shared that they just have no idea how to get started with writing a short story. I have so many fun activities I do to help them get over this nervousness and start writing!

Here's how to do this fun and NO PREP creative writing activity:

1️⃣ take a piece of paper and fold it into four squares
2️⃣ in the top left box label it with a relatively boring/everyday profession
3️⃣ pass it to your left
4️⃣ draw a quick image of this person and name them (90 seconds)
5️⃣ pass again
6️⃣ now give that person a special weapon/ability (90 seconds)
7️⃣pass again
8️⃣ in the top right box write out the name of the villain of this story (90 seconds)
9️⃣ pass
🔟 give the villain speacial powers (90 seconds)

Keep passing and adding on details! Like:

🧙‍♂️Mentor- who is he/she? What does he teach the hero?

🤺 Conflict? What fight happens between the hero and villain?

By the end it’s a quick (often silly) story outline and we have a lot of fun sharing out loud. It takes the fear out of where to start and how to make your story flow.
