STORYLINE:
Striking transport workers slowed France to a crawl on Wednesday morning as unions and the government dug in for a pivotal standoff over President Nicolas Sarkozy's bid to strip away labour protections he says are hobbling growth.
Railroads around the country stood empty after workers for the SNCF (French National Railway Company) rail authority launched an open-ended strike on Tuesday night.
Paris transit workers joined on Wednesday morning in the strike against plans to extend their retirement age.
Signs announcing service disruptions dangled at subway stations and bus and tram stops citywide.
The highway circling the city was at a standstill well before dawn. Many commuters walked, biked or rode children's scooters to work under gray, drizzly skies.
The SNCF rail network said only 15 to 20 percent of trains on major lines would run during the strike, and warned that traffic would likely be disrupted through the weekend. It urged travellers to postpone their trips.
Commuters at Paris' Gare du Nord train station were feeling the effects of the strike.
"Yes it is a very difficult morning. It's not easy to get a train. I thought there would be trains here at the Gare du Nord but there are none," one man told AP Television.
Paris' public transit authority RATP said there would be almost no trains on most underground routes starting on Wednesday. One line, the north-south line 14, ran normally because it is automated.
The Eurostar between Paris and London was predicted to run as usual, though the strike hit the same day that the cross-Channel train line launched a new, faster route heading into London's St. Pancras station.
