Let me ask you when was the last time that you went on a trip?

If you're like many business owners it may have been a while.

A simple tip I have for you is if you want to plan your dream trip you need to plan your dream business so that you have both the time and money to enjoy your dream trip.

Creating the road map for your business like a vacation requires careful planning and considerations to make sure you arrive at your destination in a timely manner with no surprises.

When businesses do not create a roadmap or short and long-term goals for their business they're losing valuable time by focusing on things that do not really matter.

Their business doesn't grow and they become stagnant in their progress.

You either plan to win or your lack of planning unfortunately means that you're planning to fail.

Here are five things to get you started planning your business roadmap:

Plan with the end in mind. Stephen Covey said, “Begin with the end in mind.” When you know your end goal it allows you to create a plan that will guide the direction of your business.” The end goal is up to you, do you plan to sell, use it for passive income, or generate wealth to buy other businesses, the goal is up to you but know what you want so you can plan accordingly.


Develop a family bucket list plan. Your family has just as much influence on your business as you do so consider their plans as well. Are your children headed to college or maybe they want to eventually take over the business. Perhaps your spouse wants to retire. You have to plan for all of these things. Traveling or relocating can also affect the plans that you have for your business so you want to make sure that you determine all of these things as quickly as possible to avoid road bumps along the way.


Know what you don’t want. It may be obvious that you want to avoid failure or bankruptcy. But also consider that you don’t want to worry about payroll, don’t want to worry about debt, don't’ want to do everything yourself, don’t want to pass up vacations or holidays, or living paycheck to paycheck. When you think of what you do not want then you can strive for the opposite and achieve the things that you do want.


Consider the company you keep. First, get rid of unmotivated employees; they only hold you and your business back. Second, surround yourself with driven and like-minded business owners. This will encourage you and put you in the right mindset to pursue success.
What does your past look like? Know the numbers in your business. Track your history including your financials, profits, spending, and marketing. With this information you can see what areas you excel in as a business and what areas need improvement. This is an important input to your plan. You can avoid the same errors and build upon past successes.

One last reminder, start where you're at. It is never too early or too late to create a plan and set goals for your business.
