In a split 2-1 decision, the Supreme Court (SC) issued an order on Friday to reinstate corruption cases against public office holders that had previously been withdrawn due to amendments made to the country's accountability laws.

The verdict, which had been reserved, was announced by a three-member bench consisting of Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Ijazul Ahsan, and Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah. This decision came in response to a 2022 petition filed by PTI Chairman Imran Khan challenging the amendments made to the accountability laws.

Chief Justice Bandial and Justice Ahsan ruled in favor of Imran's petition, deeming it maintainable. However, Justice Shah dissented from the majority opinion. The majority verdict not only ordered the restoration of corruption cases but also directed the reinstatement of inquiries and investigations.

Legal expert Rida Hosein provides an analysis of the judgment and its implications.
