Sustainable agriculture is hard to achieve, but posible. May 2014 to present: Consultant, specializing in International development, development economics and agriculture; and coffee/cocoa farmer in Peru.

Sept 2014- February 2015: consultant evaluating the replenishment process of the African Development Fund and evaluating the strategy and policy making processes of the AfDB.

I am a co-owner with my wife Maria Nikolov of a farm and tourism business in the Department of San Martin, Peru which produces organic coffee, cacao, and seedlings for replanting tropical forests. We support the park service of the Abiseo Park in Peru (a World Heritage site).

September 2006- April 2014: The Associate Vice President (Assistant Secretary General in the common UN system), for Programs of the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD) (a specialized agency of the United Nations). I managed the staff and programs involved in IFAD’s agricultural and environmental operations world-wide.

2002-2006: Director for Agriculture and Rural Development for the World Bank Group. I had responsibility for managing the World Bank’s Agriculture and Rural Development Program globally.

1997 to 2002: World Bank’s Director for Environment, Rural Development and Social Development in the Europe and Central Asia Region of the World Bank.

1992 to 1997: Technical Director of the World Bank's Africa Region.

Prior to 1992: World Bank’s Chief of Agriculture in the Africa Region’s Technical department; Agriculture division chief for West Africa (1987-1991); Agriculture section chief for the Kenya office of the World Bank (1982-1987); and an agricultural economist working on North Africa (1977-1982).
