*NO SPOILERS*

In this candid Book Review of Christina Hammonds Reed's The Black Kids, I share my opinions on why it is an important read and why everyone should read it. This novel allows all children to see black characters in non-stereotypical ways, which is important for all of us. When black students can see themselves in a variety of ways in the texts they read, it allows them to envision possibilities for themselves that they may not have otherwise imagined. When everyone else can see Black people in literature in non-stereotypical roles, it also helps them shape their ideas of who Black people are, what they contribute, and what they can become. Representation Matters. It is important that students read books with Black main characters who are not marginalized and/or impoverished.
