Gamelan is a traditional Javanese folk musical instrument. Gamelan is played on special occasions, such as religious ceremonies, community celebrations, wayang performances, for royal families, and accompanying dances. According to Javanese belief, gamelan was created by the god who ruled the land of Java, namely Sang Hyang Guru who lived on Mount Mahendra (Mount Lawu). Gamelan is said to be used to summon other gods. Flowers and incense are often served to accompany gamelan beats. This mystical thing is done because they believe that spirits inhabit the gamelan. Musicians must remove their shoes when playing the gamelan. Gamelan is highly respected and should not be stepped on because they believe the spirit in the gamelan can get angry and harm people who don't respect it. Some games on the gamelan are believed to influence nature. Javanese musicians believe that Gong Ageng is the main spirit of the entire gamelan.
