Shonda Buchanan is an award-winning poet, writer, and educator whose work explores complex racial and cultural identities. She is the author of five books, including the acclaimed memoir Black Indian, a finalist for the 2024 American Legacy Book Awards. Black Indian traces Buchanan’s family legacy as African Americans with Native American roots, offering a powerful, raw narrative of identity, resilience, and history. Her writing has earned recognition as a Pushcart Prize nominee, and she serves as an Oxfam Ambassador and a USC Los Angeles Institute for the Humanities Fellow. Black Indian was named by PBS NewsHour as a top book for understanding institutional racism.
