Howdy. Today we will look at the oldest photographs I could locate of Norfolk, Virginia. In doing my research into Norfolk it quickly became clear that discovering photographs of the city in the 19th century would be difficult.

The narrative associates the lack of photographic history with the numerous cataclysmic events and battles which have struck the city. Yet at the core of the history of Norfolk, we find a city that is as deeply rooted in indigenous history as any in America. The strategic role Norfolk played in shaping the earliest European settlements can be seen as directly intertwined with earlier indigenous history of the region.

Furthermore, the powers of dominance in Norfolk, upon European settlement of the landscape in the early 1600s, fueled a rapid changing of the guard (multiple times over) which continued through the Civil War, seen in things such as large-scale battles, and great fires. Let’s look deeper into the history of Norfolk, Virginia, hoping to unlock the anomalies of the past, while examining the oldest and rarest photographs.
