Omar Sangare is a Polish-born American actor, director, writer, producer, and scholar. He graduated from the National Academy of Dramatic Art in Warsaw, where he studied with Oscar-winning director Andrzej Wajda. In 1994, he was awarded a scholarship to the British American Drama Academy in Oxford, England. There, he worked with Derek Jacobi, Alan Rickman, Michael Kahn, and Jeremy Irons. In 2006, Omar Sangare received his Ph.D. from the National Academy of Dramatic Art in Warsaw. Dr. Sangare taught at UCLA, UCSB, UCSD, Westmont College, and in the UK at LAMDA. Currently, he teaches in the Department of Theatre at Williams College, with tenure awarded in 2012. He is the principal professor of acting, and directs departmental productions (“The Government Inspector,” “A Streetcar Named Desire,” “The Crucible,” “Princess Ivona,” “August: Osage County”), for which he invites students to work with global professionals, including Broadway lighting designers, European set designers, and choreographers from Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch.
In 2010, he founded the United Solo Theatre Festival at Theatre Row in New York City. Now in its eighth season, the festival is the largest solo theater event in the world, having presented almost 1000 productions from six continents. Sangare acts as the festival’s artistic director, and curates a selection of unique works, creating a welcoming environment for solo performers from around the world, and robust programming for audiences to enjoy.
His published literary work includes two books of poetry, three collections of short stories, and a book based on his doctoral dissertation, “Othello. Pale from Envy.” He wrote for theater, film, and TV. His one-man performance “True Theatre Critic” won awards in New York, San Francisco, and at other American and international festivals. He was the writer, producer, and lead actor in the TV comedy series “Black Room,” which was presented by Polish national TV network POLSAT. His career in Poland consisted of a variety of stage creations at two central theater companies in Warsaw: Teatr Dramatyczny and Teatr Studio. In the U.S., he performed the lead role in Arena Players’ “Othello,” about which The New York Times wrote “Omar Sangare was born to play Othello.” Another of his favorite credits is “3 Kinds of Exile” at the Atlantic Theater Company, in a role written especially for him by John Guare. This production has been filmed and is available at the Performing Arts Library at Lincoln Center. The U.S. Department of State created the video series “Polish American, Omar Sangare” to promote President Obama’s first visit to Poland. His work continues to be featured in American, Polish, and other European media.
Dr. Omar Sangare was born to present his talents internationally through a thriving career as an actor, director, writer, producer, educator, and philanthropist. In 2009 he received the Red Cross Diploma for his charity service and contributions over the years.
