Wrapping up the vehicles we filmed in the Toronto, Ontario area, we had the opportunity to revisit a vehicle generation we've had the pleasure of featuring before on TestDrive. The W220 Mercedes-Benz S-Class might not be a fan-favourite with the enthusiast communities, but it's a car we've had a serious fascination with for quite some time. Earlier in 2017 we had the chance to feature two different S-Class models, the 2000 S 500 and 2004 S 430, but we had very limited time with both cars. Lucky for us we spent considerable more time with this 2003 Mercedes-Benz S55 AMG.

From a technological standpoint the W220 pushed Mercedes forward exponentially. The S-Class dropped all the old design elements from the W140 and W126 S-Classes of decades past and relaunched the vehicle with a completely revamped image. The squared edges were smoothed out with a new design language found throughout the Mercedes lineup from the 2000s. The interior also received massive updates with better technology and more advanced features.

While the European markets received the W220 S-Class in 1998, us here in Canada and the rest of North America had to wait until 2000 before the first W220 hit the market. In 2003 a facelift came out with subtle exterior and interior changes, but the biggest was the addition of the supercharger on the S 55 AMG model.

We go over everything we can in our full tour and review of this 2003 Mercedes-Benz S 55 AMG, including the exterior Parktronic sensors, power folding mirrors, soft-closing doors, power opening and closing trunk, and design of the vehicle. Inside we spend a considerable amount of time talking about the front ventilated seats, heated seats, dual zone automatic climate control, Comand® navigation with Bose audio, rear window sunshades, active comfort seating, and so much more. We spend time in the front seats and in the back.

We also take this car on a road test, talking about it's 493 horsepower supercharged V8 engine, how the active body control suspension feels, and what the ride quality is like for a 15 year old car. We wrap up with a rundown of the common problems, issues, and faults to look out for if you're in the market for a W220 Mercedes S-Class.
