इस अध्याय में ऋषियों ने सूतजी से कहा कि उन्होंने एक अद्भुत कथा सुनाई है और भगवान की माया को धन्यवाद दिया है, क्योंकि यह चेतन और जड़ जगत एक ही है। जब भगवान शिव के गण अपनी इच्छानुसार अन्यत्र चले गए, तब कामातुर और क्रोधी नारद मुनि ने क्या किया, यह जानने योग्य कौतूहल का विषय है। सूतजी ने बताया कि भगवान शिव की इच्छा से मोहित हुए नारद मुनि ने उन दोनों गणों को शाप दे दिया और जल में अपना मुख देखने लगे। भगवान शिव की इच्छा से अपना ज्ञान खो चुके नारद मुनि को भगवान विष्णु के वियोग का स्मरण हो आया और वे विष्णुलोक को चले गए। वहाँ पहुँचकर उन्होंने भगवान विष्णु को अप्रिय और निरर्थक वचन कहे और उन्हें कपटी तथा दुष्ट कहा। नारद मुनि ने कहा कि भगवान विष्णु ने मोहिनी रूप धारण करके दैत्यों को छला है और यदि भगवान शिव विष न पिएँ, तो उनकी माया उसी दिन समाप्त हो जाएगी। नारद मुनि ने भगवान विष्णु को स्त्री-पुरुषों के दुःख भोगने का शाप दे दिया। नारद मुनि के इस श्राप के कारण भगवान विष्णु ने भगवान शिव की माया की स्तुति की और श्राप को स्वीकार कर लिया। भगवान शिव ने उनकी माया नष्ट कर दी जिससे नारद मुनि की बुद्धि निर्मल हो गई और उन्हें पहले जैसा ज्ञान प्राप्त हो गया। नारद मुनि अपनी माया नष्ट कर भगवान विष्णु के चरणों में गिर पड़े। भगवान विष्णु ने उन्हें उठाया और कहा कि यह सब भगवान शिव की इच्छा से हुआ है। उन्होंने नारद मुनि को भगवान शिव की शुभ कीर्ति गाने और भगवान शिव के शतनामस्तोत्र का पाठ करने का उपाय बताया। भगवान विष्णु ने नारद मुनि से कहा कि महादेव की पूजा करने से सभी पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं और महादेव के प्रति अनन्य भक्ति से मोक्ष की प्राप्ति होती है। नारद मुनि को भगवान शिव की पूजा करने और भगवान शिव की महिमा सुनने की सलाह दी गई। अंत में भगवान विष्णु ने नारद मुनि को महादेव की महिमा के दर्शन कराए.

In this Chapter, the sages told Sutji that they have narrated a wonderful story and thanked the Maya of God, because this animate and inanimate world is the same. When Lord Shiva's Ganas went somewhere else as per their wish, what did Narad Muni, who was lustful and angry, do, is a curious thing to discover. Sutji told that Narad Muni, who was bewildered by Lord Shiva's wish, cursed those two Ganas and looked at his face in the water. Narad Muni, who had lost his knowledge due to Lord Shiva's wish, remembered Lord Vishnu's departure and left for Vishnulok. Reaching there, he said unpleasant and nonsense words to Lord Vishnu and called him a hypocrite and wicked. Narad Muni said that Lord Vishnu deceived the demons by assuming the form of Mohini and if Lord Shiva did not drink poison, his Maya would end that very day. Narad Muni cursed Lord Vishnu to suffer the sorrows of men and women. Due to this curse of Narad Muni, Lord Vishnu praised the Maya of Lord Shiva and accepted the curse. Lord Shiva destroyed his Maya due to which Narad Muni's intellect became pure and he got the same knowledge as before. Narad Muni destroyed his Maya and fell at the feet of Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu raised him and said that all this happened due to the will of Lord Shiva. He told Narad Muni the solution of singing the good fame of Lord Shiva and reciting the Shatanamastotra of Lord Shiva. Lord Vishnu told Narad Muni that all sins are destroyed by worshiping Mahadev and salvation is achieved by exclusive devotion towards Mahadev. Narad Muni was advised to worship Lord Shiva and listen to the glory of Lord Shiva. In the end, Lord Vishnu gave Narad Muni the vision of the glory of Mahadev and instructed Brahmaji, the messenger of Brahmaloka, about the greatness of Mahadev.
