Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori has announced the launch of a campaign to promote the consumption of llama and alpaca meat.

The campaign is an effort to cut imports of foreign meat and create awareness of the benefits of eating the meat.

President Fujimori eats it and he hopes Peruvians will start eating it too.

It's alpaca and llama meat and the Peruvian government plans to turn it into one of their national dishes.

The campaign is a government effort to cut down on foreign meat imports and increase the local consumption and export of Peruvian meat.

It will also create awareness of the benefits of eating llama and alpaca meat.

The meat is already consumed in Cuzco- the country's largest llama and alpaca growing region.

It is believed to be low in cholesterol and healthier than beef.

Fujimori said he himself will switch from beef to alpaca meat.

The government will work with the private sector and the National South American Camelidos Commission.

Camelidos include camels and three types of Andean llamas.

Both the government and the private sector will research methods to improve the quality of the meat, make it more attractive to consumers and regulate the slaughter of the animals.

If the meat becomes a success it will add to these animals reputation as the "Andean gold".
