Are you about to move into your first property? As a first-time buyer, there are a lot of new things to think about and the main item to consider is your utility bills. In this video, Phil Spencer explains how to avoid spending too much money on utility bills for gas, electricity and water.

First-time buyers often end up spending more than the average household on utility bills. Here, Phil explains what you need to do to prevent spending money unnecessarily and other proactive ways you can continue to keep utility costs down in your first home.

TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR UTILITIES
To help avoid paying too much for utilities, you need to make yourself aware of where the fuse box is and where your meters are located:
find your gas / electricity meters
know where your trip switch is housed (usually found in the fuse box)
check and note down your meter point administration number (this will be unique to your home)

HOW TO AVOID SPENDING TOO MUCH ON UTILITIES
Take a meter reading on the day you move into your first home and provide the information to your energy supplier - this will ensure you get an accurate bill from the start
Do not stay on the standard tariff used by the previous home owners - these can be very expensive

PROACTIVE WAYS TO KEEP UTILITY BILLS LOW
Invest in loft and/ or wall insulation
Install a water meter - this way, you will only pay for water you use
