Painting the Psychedelic World: David LaCock's Colorful Hawaiian Art

In this video, I want to share with you the incredible journey of my life as an artist living on this beautiful island. When I finished high school, I had dreams of becoming an actor and even worked at NBC studio for a brief period. However, something didn't feel right, and I decided to take a leap of faith. With only thirty dollars in my pocket, some art supplies, and a surfboard, I arrived on this island that embraced me like no other.

Over the past 43 years, I've been fortunate enough to call this place my home. Back in the '70s, we were like children of the psychedelic world, and the vibrant colors always inspired me. I love the process of painting, taking tubes of paint and freely expressing myself on canvas. It's like magic when the colors come together and create something beautiful.

While I've mainly painted for friends and kept my work relatively unknown, I've accumulated over 120 paintings that have reached people all the way from Thailand and New York to Canada and California. One particular painting, which I've kept hidden for 15 years, depicts Prince Lohia's time in the 1600s when he lived in this very place.

I want to showcase a few of my favorite pieces in this video. "The Happy Hawaiians" is a painting that captures the joy and wonder of Hawaiian life. Another portrait I'm proud of is one of Jerry Hall dressed up as a siren. It's amazing how well I captured his essence in that painting.

One of my most significant undertakings was a painting called "The Tunnel of Love," inspired by my wife's weekly tea gatherings. It took me nearly two years to complete, and it's filled with intricate details that bring the piece to life.

Living here feels like residing in a Mother Goose fairytale land, where stories of Krishna and love abound. In one painting, I've centered Krishna surrounded by fairies and Mother Nature awakening. Kauai, where I call home, was created by a whimsical and awe-inspiring God. Every morning, I wake up to the breathtaking view of the Manoa Valley waterfall and the majestic mountain, and I can't help but feel grateful for the privilege of living here.

Join me on this visual journey as I share the stories behind these paintings and the inspiration that Kauai has provided throughout my artistic career.
