Stage lines followed dirt roads cut through rough terrain, and while the passengers were important, the real priority was the U.S. Mail.

From the very beginning, mail was a driving force behind route development. The Republic of Texas awarded mail contracts to whoever could make the run, often at great risk. One early example, Route #14, ran from Gonzales to Béxar (San Antonio) by way of Cibolo. These contracts weren’t just about letters — they were about connecting remote communities, delivering newspapers, and making sure settlers stayed informed about the world beyond their fence line. This was the internet of the 1800s!
