Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout! is a free-fall at Disney California Adventure Park theme park , which opened on May 27, 2017. Located in the Avengers Campus themed area , the attraction revolves around the Guardians of the Galaxy film . The attraction replaced the former attraction The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror , which closed its doors on January 3, 2017. In 2018, the attraction won a Thea Award.

The backstory is set around the Collector 's exhibit from Guardians of the Galaxy . He framed the Guardians by inviting them to his exhibition, but then captured them. He then locked them up in electric cages and even placed these cages as objects in his exhibition. Now the Collector is reopening his exhibit for everyone to see his latest addition: the imprisoned Peter Quill/ Star-Lord , Gamora , Drax the Destroyer , Groot and Rocket Raccoon .

Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout can be found in the Avengers Campus themed area. The building is designed as a kind of red-orange power station, in which the exhibition of the Collector, the Tivan Collection, is organized. Guests enter the attraction through the queue, which almost immediately enters the building's lobby. In front of this reception hall is a golden statue of the Collector himself. The lobby itself is filled with valuable artifacts and artifacts from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A welcome video plays in the lobby where the Collector talks about the newest addition to his collection: the Guardians of the Galaxy. However, the Collector says that guests must first be scanned for security reasons and therefore invites the guests to his private office. After this scan, guests can take the elevator to the top floor of the building to view the Guardians there. Guests are then split into two rows: either to the left or to the right. Both queues end up in a library-like workroom, in which objects and artifacts are also displayed.

A video is started in the office in which the Collector explains the security scan. Just then, however, Rocket appears in the workroom (in animatronic form), muting the sound of the video. Rocket explains that by making it through the security scan, the guests can get to the generator that powers the Guardians' electric cages. He asks the guests to help him turn off the generator and help the other Guardians escape. Then a second door opens and guests are led to the elevators.

When guests have boarded and the elevator doors close, the elevator moves backwards. On the elevator doors is a shadow play of Rocket, who pulls the cables of the elevators to make the generator falter. He also starts a walkman with one of six different songs ( Hit Me with Your Best Shot , Give Up The Funk , Born to Be Wild , I Want You Back , Free Ride and Burning Love). Then the elevator rises several floors, the doors open and the active generator can be seen that suddenly shuts off. Then the doors close, after which the elevator rises a few floors again. When the doors open on this floor, there is a view of the Guardians' cages, from which they have now escaped. However, due to the power being turned off, several creatures have escaped, which the Guardians must escape from. Then the attraction's free-fall program is activated - by randomizing a number of free-fall programs, this program is different every time. An attraction photo is taken at the top of the tower. As the elevator passes the Guardians' floor, different scenes are shown each time. Finally the elevator stops at this floor and the Guardians have escaped,

When the free fall program is over, the elevator descends to the level of a boarding station and travels forward back to the elevator doors. Guests can then exit the elevator and exit the attraction past the attraction photo screens and through the souvenir shop (The Collector's Warehouse).
