Working with neurodiverse teens and adults, for the Gatepath Social Connection Film Program, we have created an innovative curriculum to teach film and media. Our hype reel showcases the power of film and media programs to support social, creative, team, and technical skills. The curriculum is specifically designed to adapt to adults of all abilities so EVERYONE has a role in the cast or crew.
Students work through the Five Stages of Production, work as a team, make friends, and make movies. While technical skills and the final media project are important, it is far more important to live and grow through the creative and production process so students cultivate life-long enthusiasm for making media. The program helps adults (young AND elder) foster resilience, creativity, problem solving, team trust, and social skills with diverse groups.
The Gatepath Film School Program was previously hosted as a social program on Friday nights and Saturdays. At Abilitypath, it is now hosted as a RIASEC Pathway (Arts Path) in an adult day program funded by the regional centers. The Film and Media program could easily encompass all the vocational pathways enumerated in the RIASEC model in a stand alone program design to support neurodiverse adults vocational exploration and as a social enterprise company (as it does in many non-profits in California).
Elements of the program can also be right-sized to support individual goals who pursue film and media careers in the Self Determination Program which is the manifestation of the Person Centered Planning movement in neurodiverse support paradigms.
