What is Furosemide ( Lasix 40 mg )?

Furosemide is a loop diuretic. It inhibits sodium and chloride reabsorption in proximal part of ascending loop of Henle. It acts directly on the cells of the nephron and indirectly modifies the content of the renal filtrate.

It is available as 20, 40, and 500 mg tablets, and also available as injection.

Furosemide is used in the treatment of edema associated with CHF, hepatic cirrhosis, and renal disease; hypertension.

Edema
Adult: Initial: PO 20–80 mg/d as single dose. Increase by 20–40 mg q6–8h prn. Maximum: 600 mg/d.
Hypertension
Adults: Initial: PO 40 mg b.i.d.
CHF, chronic renal failure
Adults: PO 2–2.5 g/d.
