Enrique Mendizabal makes the case for developing a digital strategy. He proposes that the greater context in which think tanks and researchers operate is changing, from the way information is accessed, to the manner in which they collaborate and share information, to methods of fundraising. He discusses two possible scenarios. In the first, new technologies present a huge disruptive force that will completely change the way think tanks work. And in the second, these changes are underway, but they have not completely occurred yet - this is the case in many developing countries, and this offers the opportunity to evolve in time to be successful in the changed world.

Mendizabal then proposes several starting points for think tanks, and he addresses some potential challenges. In response to questions from the audience, he also touches on the importance of a strategy in dealing with the enthusiasm with which different generations within the same organisation may view the uptake of new technologies.

This session at the Think Tank Initiative Exchange 2012 explores how a digital strategy can enhance think tank management, research, and communications. The session aims to help think tanks begin thinking of a digital strategy that fits their context, and to determine if and how they should take advantage of various digital tools.
