Every version of the official Caramelldansen music video from Caramell(a girls) side by side.
(I have excluded others like the music video by Exit and the live performances, I’m just here to compare the versions of this specific video)
On the far left we have the 2008 versions, first the 4:3 Sweedish (240P), then English (360p), next row are 16:9 versions, first the 16:9 English (480P!) version (actually uploaded a day before the 4:3 English version), then the German (720p, 2009) and Japanese (720p, 2009) versions
Next we have the 2012 “HD” releases, first the Swedish (720p) and English (also 720p).
Finally, the 2021 (4K) releases, Sweedish, English, German, and Español, all 3840x2160.
Something fun of note is that it looks like every version has been rendered at at 25FPS, I suspect a limitation of the original software used, I wouldn’t imagine it’d be an issue of it simply lacking interpolation over 25fps?
I’m rather limited, this video is only 8K, so each of the “4k” vids are at half-res. If I can work out how to render this at 16k, I’ll throw it up at full res. Maybe also fill out the blanks. Pick a fav, mabe throw the exit trance in anyway, heck, we have a HD version now, might as well rip my DVD before bit-rot hits it.
A 4 pack of redbull and the closest I've ever got my M1 mini to self combusting, I've never seen it leave the 50's before, let alone hit 70 degrees. Still, transcoding 4x 4k videos at once, with a few other 1080p’s on the side just to import them into iMovie, doesn’t matter the fan was locked at max, I feel bad for the poor thing.
Not that 70c was anything to write home about back in the intel days, but it’s like hitting 176km/h in any of my cars. Not impressive elsewhere, but quite a memory in this case.
Anyway, is this just a passive aggressive way of me challenging caramel to releasing a frame-perfect re-render of the original?
Maybe even throwing a high-quality MP4 up somewhere so YouTube doesn’t butcher the compression?
I’d say if they really cared about INTERNET HISTORY they’d throw the project files up on github, even if you need a $200,000 licence for some ancient software to render it.
I’m sure someone would make an MMD extension overnight.
(Also I might just have to crop the raw 4k into 4:3 to display on my old iMac G3’s, looking at the 4:3 version, it just hits different…)
Still, all them changes they made. SAD!
(Still seriously love you all, I was happy just to get a HD version way back in the day, now we have this…)
Seriously though, those panning shots from the floor, they make me wanna cry.
SPEAKING OF, NO I COULDN’T HAVE DISABLED ALL BUT ONE AUDIO TRACK YOU COWARDS, OR SYNCED IT, ENJOY :3
(retvrn to Konata)
Hey if I’ve been pretending it’s 2011 for the last decade so can you.
(le verboten maymay arrow)you will never watch “Haruhi Suzumiya Episode 1- Part 1” for the first time ever again
Or were you more indie, and instead hit up “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya English Dub Episode 1 [1/3]”?
God what I’d do for my exact watch history from 10 years ago…
I think I jotted down the date and time, down to the morning I discovered Miku, at least I have that…
Miku lead to MMD (tutorials), which lead to Caramelldansen (heh), the top results after searching that were Haruhi (naturally), and then some time later I was led back to Haruhi. What good times…
I think the most profound think I’ve realised in life, after endlessly trying to recapture so many emotions, is that it’s not just a matter of being in the same place, with the same devices, watching the same media, at the same time of day, during the same season, it still won’t be the same.
Even with the same old friend group, it’ll be different, because not only are they all different people to who they were at the time, so are you.
You can never be that person again, and you can never experience it the same way again. That’s why nostalgia’s such a blessing, you can still feel things the same way, not by experiencing it again, but simply by remembering it.
I was talking to a friend, they said they got really into LOTR when they were in their late teens, read all the books cover to cover, absolutely loved them, and that they know damn well they’ll never read them again.
I think they understood the same thing.
Truth be told I think I’ve only watched all of Haruhi through three times, Yuki-chan maybe twice, Disappearance twice, and Lucky Star once, and those viewings of Haruhi have been spread pretty evenly over the last decade, I’m not sure I’ll watch them again for a while.
But I know I will watch them again.
Preferably from the rooftop of an apartment complex in Nishinomiya…
