Some trees in Brooklyn Park will be cut down, and it’s not because they’re in bad shape. Those in the way of planes taking off and landing at the Crystal Airport are on the chopping block.

Metropolitan Airports Commission officials say cottonwoods at Edgewood Park just north of the airport, and some other locations, are going to grow too tall and could interfere with flight paths. 81 trees total will come down, but the good news is that many of them are cottonwoods on public land. Those on private land still need to be removed. But MAC will pay homeowners fair market value for them. MAC says it will also give advice to homeowners on what kinds of trees to plant that won’t grow too tall for planes in the future. Tree removal starts this fall. MAC says it’s waiting until then to avoid “impacting animal habitats.”
