The White Ribbon Project Stories, Episode 01:
If you've been involved in the lung cancer community, odds are you've heard of (or met) Heidi Nafman-Onda, who was suddenly diagnosed with stage 3A lung cancer at age 55.
As a veteran health trainer and educator, Heidi was as shocked by her lung cancer as she was ashamed of telling people about it, so she explored what was driving those feelings.
For this wife and mother, she realized she didn’t see many lung cancer stories, even after learning how lung cancer was the leading cancer-causing death in the United States. After feeling rejected by cancer centers on her effort to drive up more awareness about lung cancer, she decided to change things, herself.
Her husband, Pierre, a former primary care physician, went to work and carved out a white ribbon out of wood. The movement to build and pass out these wooden white ribbons is meant to convey very targeted messages, including:
Anyone with lungs can get lung cancer.

In this Series
The White Ribbon Project is a grassroots organization powered by lung cancer patients, caregivers, healthcare providers, researchers - anyone who wants to help raise lung cancer awareness. The group creates and distributes wooden white ribbons as a symbol of its powerful movement to shift the narrative on lung cancer and break stigmas.
The Patient Story is proud to share stories of some of these incredible people. From stage 1 to stage 4, those with and without histories of smoking, to caregivers and doctors, their mission is clear: Let's lead with love and change the lung cancer story.
