Lovecraft Country’s second episode has a lot going on and a major character death. The ending may be confusing for viewers who haven’t read the book of the same name that the HBO series is based on. In this video we explain the reason the Braithwhite family kidnapped Montrose, and why they wanted Atticus to come looking for him. We explain the Order of the Ancient Dawn, The Sons of Adam, and the ceremony Samuel Braithwhite was trying to perform at the end of episode 2. We talk about what the ending means for Tic, Leti, uncle George, Montrose, and Christina Braithwhite based on extra details from the book that the show left out or changed.

This video only contains spoilers for the first two episodes, and the corresponding chapter in the book. We explain what’s happened so far, but don’t spoil anything beyond that including the ending.

Inexplicably recovered from their terrifying night, Leti and George luxuriate in their new surroundings, while Atticus grows suspicious of their Ardham Lodge hosts – Christina Braithwhite (Abbey Lee) and her elusive father Samuel (Tony Goldwyn) – who unveil cryptic plans for Atticus’ role in their upcoming “Sons of Adam” ceremony. Later, after Tic, Leti, and George stumble upon a clue that could lead them to Montrose, each takes an unwelcome walk down memory lane.

This video breaks down the ceremony where Samuel Braithwhite attempts to enter the Garden of Eden and achieve immortality. We talk about the parallels between the show and the source material and explain how things end in the second episode. Tic, George, and Leti have made it to Ardham, but they don’t really understand what that means. After battling the shoggoths they realize there are supernatural forces at play, and the mysterious blonde woman who helped them on their journey is probably connected.

Based on Matt Ruff's novel of the same name, Lovecraft Country follows Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he meets up with his friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett) and his uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father (Michael Kenneth Williams). This begins a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying monsters that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback.
