Medieval Axbridge - The smallest town in Somerset

Описание к видео Medieval Axbridge - The smallest town in Somerset

Medieval Axbridge is the smallest town in Somerset but one of its gems. The town was granted its charter by King John but the decline of the weaving industry offered no incentive to modernise the homes resulting in the treasurty of medieval buildings that surround the town square. A similar decline in the local weaving industry preserved the medieval town of Lavenham in Suffolk.
The Parish Church of St John rising to over 100feet above the market square dates back to 1636 and beyond.
In its properous days the town had a mint, stamping its symbol of the Lamb and Flag on the coins. Today the Lamb Inn is one of three old coacking inns lining the square. Merchant's houses constructed in timber and medieval brick stretch away from the central square.
