The €2.3bn Room for the River project was born. This literally expands the area through which the rivers IJssel, Rhine, Lek and Waal can flow. It comprises projects at 34 locations along the rivers, carried out via a series of techniques such as excavating the riverbed, relocating dykes and making space for temporary water storage.

Carbon Brief asked to Ingwer de Boer, who is special advisor to the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment, about the project, at a conference on adapting to climate change.
