On November 4, 1980, former California Governor Ronald Wilson Reagan was elected as the 40th President of the United States. He received 489 electoral votes, incumbent President Jimmy Carter received 49 electoral voted, and Congressman John Anderson received no electoral votes. Reagan got 50.7% (43,903,230) of the popular vote, Carter got 41.0% (35,480,115) of the popular vote, and Anderson got 6.6% (5,719,850) of the popular vote. Reagan's running mate was former CIA Director George H.W. Bush. Carter's running mate was incumbent Vice President Walter Mondale. John Anderson's running mate was former Ambassador Patrick Lucey.
