Hello Everyone! I hope you all had a great week. I know mine was so much better. Thank you all for your kind words, encouragement and support! It means so much! I hope you will enjoy this video, it was fun to make and took about 4 months to complete. When I was teaching a workshop in South Carolina this May, one place I took the group was this ancient oak tree on St. John's Island. Some age estimates of The Angel Oak begin at 400 and have gone up to 1,500. I just fell in love with the tree and it's sublime peace that seemed to whisper in all the leaves and surrounding forest. It was enchanting and I knew I was definitely going to make a painting of it a reality. Which usually means, I take you along!
This video is full of useful information, beginning with a quick plein air painting from the demo of my workshop while on location. I kept it brief because I wanted the main focus of this video to be about working with the plein air and the photo back in the studio. The canvas I use is two feet tall and four feet long! I am asked sometimes to do lar4ger works, and this was the perfect fit for that request. I include lots of information on working out the process to complete this painting; the sketch on canvas, color mixing, brushwork, cool/warm balance, capturing light, using edges, putting people into your landscape, as well as using your imagination! One of the greatest challenges we face is to try not to be so literal! Copying a photo is easy, making artistic judgements is difficult.
I tried to condense it down to a manageable time, but I had hours of film to deal with. Anyway, I hope you find some nuggets you can take with you! Happy Painting!
