Capital One Financial Corp. (NYSE:COF) has acquired ING Groep NV's United States online banking business. Capital One bought the online banking business for a total of $9 billion, $2.8 billion in stock for ING Direct USA, and $6.2 billion in cash. The stock will give ING around 10% ownership of the company they are selling.

Before the deal is even closed, Capital One expects to raise $2 billion in fresh capital. The deal is expected to close later this year. Capital One is currently the ninth-largest bank in the United States by deposits. With the addition of ING Direct, Capital One would become number 6 on the list, ahead of U.S. Bancorp (NYSE:USB). Bank of America Corp (NYSE:BAC) is still number 1.

The Dow Jones also reported that Capital One has also bid for HSBC Holdings PLC's United States credit card business. This bidding is in the early stages however.

ING of Amsterdam was ordered by the European Commission to sell the business by 2013 as a condition for government aid it had received during the financial crisis.
