Tod Wyoming:
"Well, folks, your ol’ pal Tod’s been diggin’ through that crate of dreary ol’ holotapes ol’ Stan dropped off—doom, gloom, and the sound of a world that forgot how to dance. But don’t you worry, I already laid down some swing tracks over ‘em. You’d be surprised how a trumpet solo can make the end of the world tap its toes.

So if you hear a tune that sounds like sorrow singin’ in a coffin—don’t fret. Tod Wyoming already tuned it up. That’s right, I make the wasteland swing, even if I gotta drag it kickin’ and screamin’."

[Static – crackle.]
“—thank you for choosing the Great Lakes Transit Authority, your safe, reliable, and efficient passenger rail service through the American heartland! Next stop… Riverton Station!”

“Attention passengers… please remain calm. The… ah… the outside weather is a little more intense than expected. Radiation levels are climbing, but don’t worry, the Great Lakes Transit Authority is committed to your safety. Please stay in your seats. Do not… I repeat… do not look out the windows.”

[A man mutters off-mic]
‘Oh God, they’re already peeling, they’re peeling—’

[The announcer returns, voice trembling, but still trying to keep a customer-service tone.]
“Folks, we are experiencing… some, uh… minor complications. The conductor has informed me there are… silhouettes on the tracks ahead. Please remain calm, and remember—our rails have never failed the American traveler. H-haha…”

[Another voice yells: “They’re getting inside!”]

[The announcer now whispers, almost as if speaking to himself.]
“…they told us to keep smiling… to keep talking… while the lights go out… oh God, I can hear them crawling on the roof. Claws. So many claws. Why did we stop here?”

[Final words, distorted, low, as if spoken directly into the mic, with no cheer left.]
“…if anyone finds this tape… don’t follow the tracks east. The things that walk them… they never stop. The rails sing to them. The rails belong to them now.”
