Held annually in the historic market town of Ashbourne, Derbyshire, this unique two-day event takes place on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. The entire town becomes the playing field as hundreds of players compete in a centuries-old form of “mob football,” battling to score goals set three miles apart.
With no pitch, no set team size, and only a handful of traditional rules, the game is divided between the Up’Ards and Down’Ards, depending on where players were born in relation to the Henmore Brook. The match lasts up to eight hours each day, passing through streets, rivers, fields, and historic landmarks — creating an unforgettable spectacle of community, endurance, and heritage.
