STORYLINE:

Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar has pledged to continue to work with the United States to fight terrorism.

Aznar is in Washington for a meeting with President George W. Bush and a round of talks with world banking leaders.

During an Oval Office meeting at the White House, Aznar expressed his continued support for Bush's war on terrorism.

President Bush delivered condolences to Spain for the enormous oil spill from a sunken tanker off northwestern Spain. He said the US would help the recovery effort.

An aging, single-hulled tanker ran into trouble on November 13 off the Spanish coastal town of Galicia, then broke in two and sank six days after the leakage started. Aznar has been criticised for failing to act more quickly to deal with the disaster.

During the Oval Office meeting, Bush praised Aznar as a strong supporter in the war on terrorism. However, among the stickier items sure to intrude on the meeting is Spain's displeasure over being involved by the United States in an embarrassing high seas takeover of a legal missile shipment to Yemen.

In the leaders' public remarks ahead of their talks, only points of cooperation and agreement were raised.

Another agenda item for the meeting was to be the Bush administration's resolve to take on Iraqi President Saddam Hussein if he does not give up weapons of mass destruction.

Along with Poland and Italy, Spain has offered moral support for a military campaign, if not explicit promises of troops or other material help. Aznar offered to continue this close working relationship in the war against terrorism.

Earlier on Wednesday, Aznar met with US Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan. The meeting was one in a series of scheduled talks with financial sector heads in Washington.
