Kevin Newbury, one of America's fastest-rising young directors, will conceive and direct Virginia Opera's new production of Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel. This will mark his return to the company after having directed the world premiere of Ricky Ian Gordon and Mark Campbell's "Rappahannock County" for Virginia Opera and the Virginia Arts Festival in April, 2011.

Already his opera credits include "Roberto Devereux" for Minnesota Opera and L'Opera de Montreal, "El Nino" for the San Francisco Symphony (John Adams conducting), the world premiere of "Life is a Dream" at the Santa Fe Opera, Eugene Onegin for Opera Theatre of St. Louis, "La Cenerentola" for Glimmerglass Opera Festival, "La Bohème" at Wolf Trap Opera. His staging of Leonard Bernstein's Mass for the Baltimore Symphony, Marin Alsop conducting, was seen at Carnegie Hall, in Baltimore and at the Kennedy Center. He has directed "Falstaff" for the Santa Fe Opera and has enjoyed a special relationship with the Minnesota Opera where he has directed "Maria Stuarda," "Il barbiere di Siviglia," "Le nozze di Figaro" and "Il trovatore." Newbury remounted the noted James Robinson production of "Nixon in China" for Chicago Opera Theater, Portland Opera and Cincinnati Opera. Recent New York theatre credits include the world premieres of "Candy and Dorothy "(GLAAD Media Award Winner, Drama Desk Nominee), "The Second Tosca," "The Black Monk" and "Kiss and Cry" (GLAAD Nominee).

Mr. Newbury is also in pre-production for a film adaptation of David Johnston's Mothra is Waiting. Kevin Newbury is based in New York City.
