Meryll Rose: I’m Meryll Rose. If you’re the executor of an estate you may need to hire a probate attorney to help you administer that State. Atty. Jim Higgins is here now to tell us more. Thanks for being with us today.

Jim Higgins: Sure.

Meryll Rose: So, if you’ve been at a point the executor of an estate, what do you need to do first?

Jim Higgins: Well, don’t panic, all right?

Meryll Rose: Thank you.

Jim Higgins: I mean, yes, that’s the first thing. It’s really not that hard and sometimes you do need legal help and we have an estate section that deals with that. But, you just kind of do the common sense things. Get a copy of the will, all right? Originally, if you’ve got it, kind of get all of - information you can on the finances, where the bank accounts are, what debts are owed, you know, you’re going to be getting mail that went to the decease and love ones. So, check that and you - that’s a good - and we get those once a month from your bank and from your credit cards and all of that. And, all of the financial information you get just start organizing it.

Meryll Rose: When you’re meeting with an estate lawyer, how do you prepare?

Jim Higgins: Well, you know, that first step that we just talked about, of getting everything together, that’s the first thing you want to - you want to be able to give them an organize and concise picture of what is left, you know, what are the assets that we need to distribute to the loved ones or the people are inheriting, what bills do we need to take care of, what real estates out there, so go in organize. You always want questions, you know, I expect someone to come in our State section and say, “OK, well how long would this take? What are you going to do? What’s it going to cost?” You know, those are questions that a lawyer ought to be able to answer. And, if you prepared and you have those good questions, the conversation, you ought to feel pretty comfortable about the lawyer you choose, whether it’s us or whoever to handle this estate.

Meryll Rose: So, when should someone contact your office?

Jim Higgins: You know, I think you got to do it fairly soon. You know, there’s no need to come in immediately, but I would say within a few weeks or so, it’d be nice to go and contact us and get your ducks in a row.
