Alkmaar is a city in the province of North Holland in the Netherlands , and the capital of the municipality of Alkmaar.

Alkmaar has a historic center with 399 national monuments and 700 municipal monuments . The city is known as "the cheese city". A traditional cheese market is held every week from the beginning of April to the end of September. An inhabitant of Alkmaar is called an Alkmaarder, but is referred to as a cheese head in the vernacular . The city has two railway stations : Alkmaar station and Alkmaar Noord station.
