Story behind 2pac Assault in Oakland CALIFORNIA in 1991 (2022) Location

On November 12th, 1991 at the age of 20 years old, Tupac Shakur would release his studio debut album 2Pacalypse Now. On that album there were many hit singles with songs such as Brendas got a baby and If my homie calls. Tupac expressed a hard hitting political controversial message on the entire album. Many white Americans protested the album at the time including public figures such as US Vice President Dan Quayle. One song on the album in particular was called "Trapped". The music video for Trapped was Tupacs first single to release on the album and the video was released on September 25, 1991. In the video Trapped Tupac raps about police brutality and oppression in the black communities.
Not many artists spoke out publicly about fighting back against police during that time besides a few that come to mind such as nwas "fuck the police" and ice ts "cop killer" so these songs directed at police were taken very seriously.

Frustrated by his own experiences with the police, Tupac highlights the racial injustices within society and urges to fight back against the corrupt system, specifically the police.
Around the time the album was released Tupac was living in the Bay Area between Marin City and Oakland, CA. On October 17th, 1991 about a month after the Trapped video was released Tupac found himself at the intersection of 17th and Broadway in Oakland.

Not many artists talked about publicly fighting back against police during that time besides a few that come to mind such as nwas "fuck the police" and ice ts "cop killer" so these songs directed at police brutality were taken very seriously.

Tupac was reportedly walking to Union Bank at the intersection of 17th and Broadway in Oakland when he was stopped by police for jaywalking. Police asked Tupac for his ID and reportedly made fun of his middle name "Amaru". After years of harassment, Tupac became angry and started swearing at police. Police then assaulted Tupac striking him and slamming him on the curb, eventually knocking him unconscious. Tupac would later file a lawsuit against the Oakland police department for 10 million dollars eventually settling for about 42,000.
