In this month's Uptake post, SNMMI-TS member Shannon Youngblood Ed.D, MSRS, CNMT, R.T.(CT)(ARRT) answers the heartbreaking question: "what happens when your parent becomes your patient?" Meet Brenda Nixon, a vibrant and adventurous mom and former elementary school teacher who was diagnosed with severe Alzheimer's Disease. Through intimate family photos and video clips, her daughter, Shannon, introduces us to Brenda and her life before and after Alzheimer's. While we learn about how nuclear medicine helped confirm and inform her loved ones about her diagnosis, we also learn first-hand from Shannon about the challenges of caring for a parent as they lose their memories.

Recently, SNMMI and the Alzheimer's Association released updated Appropriate Use Criteria regarding imaging and Alzheimer's Disease. Though these technical guidelines are critical, stories like Shannon and Brenda's remind us how important it is to value the individuals behind the images, allowing us to provide the highest quality of patient care.
