August 5, 2024 - We've had an outdoor burn ban in place for several weeks. Our local fire department has posted this notice to the public: "All burning, including recreational campfires and charcoal and wood burning are prohibited until further notice."

I am seeing bans of this nature occurring more regularly now than in years past. Regardless of the cause, it leads to the question of how to cook a meal and more importantly, how to boil and purify water in the event that electricity goes offline for an indefinite period of time during dry weather months. One option of course would be to use a solar cooker, especially if you could manage a way to boil water. But even the best cooker on the market, the GoSun Sport, requires sunlight to be bright enough to cast a shadow in order to reflect heat rays into the cook chamber. As most subscribers know, I live on the Olympic Peninsula where sunny skies cannot be predicted with certainty any time of the year.

What to do?

The official burn ban notice goes on to state, "The use of natural and propane gas burning self-contained camping stoves and natural and propane gas burning portable fire pits are allowed."

I decided to order a Trangia gas burner from Firebox to go with my G2. Yesterday was the first use in my Firebox G2 stove. I cooked a basic, nothing fancy, backyard meal of steak, veg & bannock and recorded the results in this video.

The Trangia gas burner met expectations. I need to work on my heat control but otherwise it cooked up a good meal with no fuss and very little clean-up. In my opinion, this is another winning combination for Firebox.

Basic Bannock Recipe

Dry Ingredients
• 1 cup of flour, All Purpose
• ½ t Salt
• 2 T Powdered Milk
• 1 t Baking Powder
Wet Ingredients
• 2 T oil olive
• ½ C to ¾ cup of water

To the bannock dry mix add a little bit of oil and some water. This is all that's needed to make the dough.

Pre-heat a skillet to about 350 or so. Check the temperature by adding a small bit of water. If droplets dance, you should be at the correct temperature. If the skillet is too hot, the outside of the bannock will be burned and the inside will be raw so don't be afraid to adjust the temperature downward when cooking if you need to. One of the nice things about the gas burner is that it allows pretty precise control of your cooking temperature.

Once the skillet is heated, add some olive oil and cook away. I like to turn my bannock at least a couple of times to minimize over cooking and to keep an eye on how it is browning.
