St. Jerome (c. 347-420 AD) was a Christian priest, theologian, and scholar who is best known for his translation of the Bible into Latin, known as the Vulgate. He was born in Stridon, a town on the border between modern-day Croatia and Slovenia.

St. Jerome was educated in Rome and later lived as a monk in the Syrian desert. He traveled extensively throughout the Eastern Mediterranean and eventually settled in Bethlehem, where he founded a monastery and continued his work on the Vulgate translation.
