Allen Edmonds is well known as a pretty dressy footwear brand — this isn’t an outdoorsy brand or a workboot company. Their offerings like the 5th Avenue and the Higgins Mill are good for dressing up, and after receiving a lot of requests to try the Sullivan Street I decided to get a pair.

Aesthetics
This boot looks a lot like the Galway boot from Edward Green, but it costs over a thousand dollars less so it’s worth exploring as an alternative. The Dainite sole is par for the course for boots at this price point but what’s really eye catching is the contrast between the pebble grain leather and the vegano calf leather, which bisects the vamp and shaft.

Leather
This comes from the famous Horween Leather Company and there are two leathers: the pebble grain, which is called softy or Scotch grain, and the calfskin, which is called vegano. It’s not vegan, of course — vegano means is a type of extra soft calf, and it’s dyed during the tanning process so the color won’t scratch off.

Use Venetian Shoe Cream or Saphir Renovateur to condition but pick up a semi stiff brush so you can make sure the cream doesn’t get stuck in the grooves of the pebble grain.

Sole
The Dainite outsole is a great combination of flexibility, durability, grip, and aesthetics — it’s nice and flat from the side but it still holds up relatively well in wet weather. (Emphasis on the “relatively.”) CustomCork, a thin layer of urethane padding, and a leather insole.

$445, but it’s often on sale for $375 and it’s not hard to find a 20% discount on Allen Edmonds’ website, especially for first time buyers.

Pros
Soft, beautiful leather
Fully lined
Good traction
Great quality control
Very flexible sole

Cons
Hard to dress down
So-so shock absorption
