Описание к видео CIMM 36 10 25 I POMYKALO IN ZD 2002 I

CIMM 36 10 25, IGOR POMYKALO RECITAL, ZADAR, 2002

MEDIEVAL MUSIC, 1st Part

Many years ago I was married with dear Maja from Zadar and due to this fact I have been proposed to collaborate with the artistic council of MUZIČKE VEČERI U DONATU (MUSIC EVENINGS IN THE ST. DONAT) in this beautiful city. Until 1973 this festival has been one of the “stations” where musicians or ensembles after performing in Dubrovnik festival could get another one or more concerts. Enchanted with so many great historical monuments and potential concert places of Zadar I proposed that at least a part of concerts are thematic linked with the so-called early music of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

Despite the opposition of the local conservative forces, with the support of the progressive people from Zadar, Radio Zagreb and renown Croatian composer of contemporary music, prof. Milko Kelemen, this idea got a chance. In the summer of 1974, my Zagreb ensemble UNIVERSITAS STUDIORUM ZAGRABIENSIS performed five serenades in several historical churches and courtyards and due to the overwhelming reactions of the Zadar and foreign public and critics, next year, 1975, Zadar festival started with thematic part devoted to the early music, performed (mostly) with adequate instruments and performance practice. In years to come beside our ensemble, colleagues from Zadar, Ljubljana and Belgrade, many renown ensembles from all over the Europe performed there. Several times ensemble UNIVERSITAS and our Viennese Ensemble LYRA, come back to give concerts with various programs.

In the summer of 2002, Concert Direction Zagreb (KDZ) and Concert Bureau Zadar asked me to prepare a special program for Musical Evenings in the palace Grisogono -Vovo with accent on the presence of several important troubadours and trouvères in Zadar, during the Venetian and crusaders assault, destruction and occupation of our beautiful town in 1202.

I prepared a rich and interesting program which beside troubadours, trouvères and medieval dances contained my improvisations on Dalmatian traditional folk instrument Lyra/ lijerica and in the 2nd part, renaissance and early baroque music from Italy and coastal Croatia i.e. Dalmatia and Istria. In the first, medieval, part of this program I played, sung a cappella or to my own accompaniment on the medieval fiddle or rebec. In the 2nd part, I played or sung to my own accompaniment on the lira da braccio or lira da gamba/ lirone. The public and critic have been enchanted with my performance and this concert remained in my best and most precious memories. Here is the detailed program of the first part of the medieval part of this recital, presenting the music of Troubadours and some medieval dances.

Music of the Troubadours present in Zadar during the Fourth Crusade (1202/05)

1.Improvised suite on the Dalmatian lyra (lijerica) with elements of Croatian
Traditional folk Music, Gregorian chant from Zadar and Spanish "Cantigas" (13th century).

2.Gaucelm Faidit (1172-1205): canso "Del grant golfe de mar" (voice and vielle)

3.Unknown French composer (1300): dance "La Quinte Estampie Real" (vielle)

4.Raimbaut de Vaquèiras (1180-1205): "Non m'agrad' ivèrns" (voice solo)

5.Unknown Italian composer (1400): dance "Saltarello" no.: 1 (rebec)

IGOR PIRNAT POMYKALO: voice, medieval vielle, rebec and Dalmatian lyra (lijerica)
