Seatown DORSET | Golden Cap | Seatown Beach | Thorncombe Beacon | Motorhome

We take you with us as we leave our Roller Team Auto Roller 707 motorhome parked up at the Golden Cap Holiday Park, and explore the local area on foot with our two rescue chihuahua dogs. Then we stop off in Exmouth on our way home.

We stayed for 2 nights at the campsite - why not check out our campsite tour and review video?    • Golden Cap Campsite (West Dorset Leis...

We had mixed weather but still got out and about. Our first foray was towards Thorncombe Beacon, a hill just to the east of Seatown, near Bridport in Dorset. The walk is part of the South West Coast Path. We didn't go far as we just wanted a sighter, but it was a nice walk and afforded us great views back over the campsite and the beach.

Later on, I went out to explore the beach, which is part sand, part shingle. This part of the Jurassic Coast is known for fossils, and there were quite a few people scouring the unusual cliffs with their tools. It also seemed a popular spot for fishing.

The beach itself is well serviced - 24 hour public toilets, which were basic but clean, and several food vendors, including 2 pizza outlets and a van serving cakes and other snacks, as well as coffees and beers. There is even a wooden mobile sauna! The Anchor Inn pub is just by the beach, although we didn't try it out, it seemed popular and gets good reviews. During our stay, we enjoyed pizzas from both Chariot of Fire and Seatown Slice (both excellent) and takeaway coffees also from Seatown Slice.

The beach has signs saying that dogs are banned in summer (until 30 September) but pretty much everyone on the beach had a dog with them! We didn't go on with ours but mainly because they don't like shingle under their toes.

The next morning, we headed out towards Golden Cap itself, which is a National Trust area. Unfortunately due to cliff erosion, there's a diversion to the coastal path, which starts off through a very wooded area. When we emerged, we were greeted with good views but awful weather - wind and heavy rain. As thunder was also forecast (but for 36 hours so we just had to use common sense and keep checking the sky otherwise we'd never have been able to get outside), we didn't hang around and headed back towards the motorhome where a shower awaited the dogs, and a change of clothes awaited the humans!

The weather improved later on in the day (none of that thunder!) so Kerry and I headed down to the beach where it even got sunny enough for us to spend half an hour or so sifting through the shingle and getting lucky in finding some interesting small pieces of sea glass and other materials.

On the final morning, we took one last walk to the seafront before packing up the wagon and heading to Exmouth, where the dogs are definitely allowed on (part of) the sandy beach. We enjoyed coffees and pastries from Hangtime and picked up a pasty and turnover from there later on for our lunch, supplemented by chips from the Harbour View. Our initial parking space only allowed us to stay for 3 hours but we weren't done, so we changed spot and spent an enjoyable afternoon looking out over the water. We struggled to pull ourselves away and even ended up making our dinner and eating it on the seafront before finally heading home.

We didn't film much of Exmouth as we've recently put out a video which shows more of it:    • Solo female van trip - Devon | Teignm...
