A fun day catch up fish up Muriwai with my mate Derek

Well after a little break from my fishing it was great to be back out flicking a few baits from the shore. With Sundays swell below a mtr for out west with light winds it meant only one thing - load the car up with the surfcast gear and head for Muriwai.

This was going to be my first fish for 2022 and what better way to start than fishing magical Muriwai. My mate Derek was keen to and the plan was to be on the beach around half 6.00 to try and find a few fish for the smoker. A couple of Kahawai and trev's were the target then we were going to finish the day off on the low trying for a few snaps of the banks. Getting onto Muriwai just after 6 we headed up the beach in search of a little hole or trough we could flick a few baits in and set our plan into action.

Fishing the high tide can be a little difficult especially when the swell is down, waves are a key ingredient for finding those inner holes and channels. We shouldn't have to many probs finding Kahawai but the little inner holes are a little deeper and this is where Trev's like to come in and mooch over the high. It was close to half tide by the time we found our spot, it wasn't as far up as I like to fish but we thought we would start here and just move if we had to. I love the early morning when it comes to my fishing from the sand up Muriwai, it's crisp coolness and airy wave sounds add to the adventure.

We geared up and flicked out our first baits with a very fishy feeling. We had a little outer bank about 70mtrs out so it was a nice little channel for fish to swim up and down. With it still being low light, although there for the kahawai and Trev's we may luck a snap as well. Derek hooked up on his first bait - pretty quickly to and too true Muriwai form in came a stonker of a kahawai. He was pretty stoked and it was his first ever Muriwai fish which was going to be binned with the plan of it finishing up in the smoker. There were plenty of bites to start with and we caught a couple more kahawai but the Trev's were playing hard to get. Although they were probably biting our baits as well, after a couple hours and the bites slowing we decided to do a shift.

Prt 2 - next week we get into the fish as the tide drops
