Why China is building this canal in Thailand?
The shortest way between China and the Middle East and Europe is through Malacca Strait, one of the most important chokepoint for China. 2 thirds of China’s entire Maritim trade passes through this strait as well as around 80% of imported oil from the Middle East.
If the strait of Malacca would be blocked by other global powers, China’s economic power will inevitably collapse, so China decided to help Thailand build this 102 km long canal which would bypass the Malacca Strait shortening the distance with 1200 km and allow China to avoid the US threat.
If finished, the canal would help China, but will cripple Singapore economy as it is located at the gates of Malacca Strait.
