Several years ago, educators at the Limestone Community School in northern Aroostook County launched a bold strategy in the face of lagging student engagement: they redesigned the middle school curriculum with a focus on nature and outdoors. Now, students learn science and math by heading outside -- tapping maple trees, canoeing, gardening, farming, and more. The hyper-local focus is helping students connect to their community, reinforce their learning, and make them more excited to head to school each day. And it's having an impact on their teachers, too.
