In 2026 , Formula One enters a new era.
For the first time in the sport’s history, active aerodynamics will be part of every car: both the front wing and rear wing will move dynamically to reduce drag or increase downforce depending on the situation.

This system replaces the traditional DRS, which has been used since 2011.
The FIA confirmed two modes:

X-Mode (Low Drag Mode)

• Wings open or flatten.
• Drag decreases significantly → higher top speed.
• Used for straights, overtakes, and acceleration zones.
• Similar goal to DRS, but more controlled and consistent.

Z-Mode (High Downforce Mode)

• Wings increase angle.
• Generates strong downforce for cornering stability.
• Cars “stick” to the track on medium–high speed corners.
• Drag increases, but grip becomes priority.

WHY THIS IS HUGE?

Teams ran 2026 aero prototypes during the Abu Dhabi post-season test.

Media outlets NewsF1.it, The Race, Nine, and several engineers confirmed that the cars were fitted with early X-Mode/Z-Mode actuation systems.

This is the first visible step into the 2026 chassis + power unit rules, which include:

• New hybrid power units with 50/50 ICE–electric split
• Stronger MGU-K (400+ hp electric deployment)
• Lightweight aero
• Reduced drag philosophy
• Greater straight-line speed
• Higher energy recovery

The 2026 cars will feel dramatically different compared to 2022–2025 ground-effect cars.
