As chief economist, Paul Steele leads the International Institute for Environment and Development's Environmental Economics team.

Working on issues across the institute, Steele offers extensive experience of working with governments, international organisations and the private sector.

In this interview, conducted on 20 January 2015, he talks about joining IIED and the issues he is looking forward to working on with the institute.

Steele previously spent eight years working for UNDP, leading the Poverty Environment Initiative (PEI) in Asia Pacific as well as developing cutting edge work on climate-responsive planning and budgeting.

Prior to that he worked as environmental economist for the Department for International Development for four years in UK and for one year at the Ministry of Environment in Sri Lanka His research interests include climate public expenditure reviews, environment fiscal reform, and natural resource governance.
