VLOG 138: Coffee Crisp Changed Me

Every trip has that one moment where you do something ridiculous just for the story. For me, this was it.

Somewhere deep in Newfoundland, in a small grocery store tucked between windblown cliffs and kind strangers, I found myself doing something I did not plan on. I started asking locals a question. Not about directions. Not about weather. I asked them, “Hey, you’re Canadian, right? What’s your favorite chocolate?”

That was the only rule. It had to be chocolate. Not gummies. Not sour belts. Not something shaped like a moose or covered in maple glaze. Just chocolate. Real. Simple. Canadian.

And one name kept coming up — Coffee Crisp.

Now let me confess something. I had never heard of Coffee Crisp. Apparently, it is a Nestlé creation, born and raised in Canada, and it has somehow flown completely under the radar where I live. But the locals spoke about it with the kind of reverence usually reserved for national parks or hockey. So I picked one up.

First impression? Confusing. It looks like a regular candy bar but lighter. Almost suspiciously light. And the name alone is strange. Coffee Crisp. Not Coffee Cream. Not Mocha Melt. Just crisp. Like it is a texture, not a taste.

The moment I opened it, I got it. That coffee scent hit fast. Like walking past a café at 7am. Strong but not bitter. Familiar but unexpected. It was not trying to smell like chocolate. It was fully leaning into the coffee side of things.

Biting into it was where things got wild. Imagine a KitKat that took a semester abroad in Italy, came back talking about espresso and architecture, and suddenly refused to hang out at gas stations anymore. Coffee Crisp is wafer on wafer, thin layers stacked with a roasted coffee filling, all wrapped in a shell of light chocolate. The crunch was sharp but delicate. It crumbled more than it snapped. The chocolate took a back seat, and the coffee took the wheel.

Honestly, it was good. Weirdly good. It was not the chocolate flavor I expected. Not creamy. Not rich. But it was balanced. Mature, even. The kind of bar that would pair well with an actual coffee. Or a long drive through foggy roads in Newfoundland with nothing on the radio but wind and thoughts.

Halfway through filming the review I tried to crack it cleanly in half for the camera and, of course, dropped it. The five second rule was applied immediately and without shame. A little gravel never hurt anyone. Probably.

What struck me most about Coffee Crisp was that it broke my one rule and still won me over. I asked for chocolate. What I got was a coffee-flavored wafer pretending to be a candy bar. And I loved it. It challenged what I thought I wanted, and gave me something better.

This is part one of a short series where I’ll be reviewing the top Canadian chocolate recommendations I received during my stay. Coffee Crisp set the bar in a very specific, caffeinated direction. More to come tomorrow. No sponsors. No gimmicks. Just me, a bag of snacks, and a camera.

Sometimes the best parts of travel are not the places or the plans. Sometimes they are the little moments. The snack you drop on the ground. The stranger who swears by a candy bar you have never heard of. The way a new flavor makes you pause and think, “Wait, why do we not have this back home?”

The next review drops tomorrow. Until then, try something unfamiliar. It might just surprise you.

You are always welcome in this space
Christopher
