STORYLINE
Ultra-Orthodox Jews in Jerusalem and elsewhere in Israel have been preparing for the festival of Passover by burning leavened foods and washing kitchen pots and utensils.
During Passover, leavened breads and most grains are prohibited.
The tradition is intended to recall the flight of the Jews from Egypt after they were freed from slavery in Pharaonic Egypt.
As the story goes, they had no time to let their bread rise before baking it.
Matza, unleavened cracker-like bread, is traditionally eaten during the Jewish Passover celebrations instead of bread.
"When we went out of Egypt, we went out with dough on our back and we ate matzas for those seven days. So we make a memory," said Zaki Dreyfus, who joined in the tradition.
In Jerusalem's Ultra-Orthodox neighbourhoods, men of all ages started bonfires of leavened foods and prayed shortly before the start of the holiday, which will begin on Monday night with a special festive meal known as the seder.
In Jerusalem and in the Israeli town of Bnei Brak, people also had their kitchen utensils and religious objects cleaned in boiling water, as part of the Passover tradition.
Meanwhile, various border crossings with the West Bank were closed by the Israeli military due to security concerns and fear of attacks inside Israel.
They will be reopened at midnight on Tuesday.
A military statement said that people in need of medical assistance or emergency aid, would be allowed to cross from the West Bank with the right authorisation.
